Part 2 | The Coffs Harbour Cup 2026
Cup Eve at The Moonee Beach Hotel
Four Tipsters. Three Beers. One Big Question

Three cold schooners. Four old mates. Tomorrow’s Cup was still a day away, but the conversation had already reached the starting gates.
Around the TAB Table at Moonee
The lunchtime crowd had begun to drift away when Tommy emerged from the bar, carefully balancing three icy schooners.
With a grin, he eased between the tables before lowering them onto the polished timber.
“There we go, gentlemen,” he smiled. “Lunch is over.”
“Now the real work begins.”
Kenny looked up from his race book just long enough to slide one of the beers towards himself.
“I’ve been working since breakfast.”
Finn laughed as he pulled out a chair.
“That’s because you think every Country Cup deserves a Royal Commission.”
“It does.”
The three old mates laughed together.
Around them the Moonee Beach Hotel hummed with that familiar country race week atmosphere. Conversations drifted between the dining room and the TAB, glasses clinked quietly across the bar and television screens rolled through meetings from around Australia while tomorrow’s Coffs Harbour Cup market appeared every few minutes.
Outside, the winter sunshine sparkled across the Pacific.
Inside, race day was already beginning.

While the boys debated the form, Freja quietly prepared for race day. Every Country Cup has its own traditions, and Fashions on the Field is one of the best.
Four Experts… Four Different Opinions
Freja adjusted the strap of her shopping bag before calling across the room.
“Don’t forget… tomorrow we’re representing Race Day Co.”
Finn looked up just in time to catch the kiss she playfully blew across the room.
“I won’t.”
Tommy nudged Kenny.
“She’s got him well trained.”
Kenny smiled over the top of his glasses.
“He’s done alright for himself.”
With that, Freja disappeared into the warm Coffs afternoon.
Hair appointment.
A little shopping.
Perhaps another coffee somewhere overlooking the water.
Tomorrow was race day and she intended to enjoy every minute of it.
Finn reached into his folder.
“Righto…”
“I’ve got something for you blokes.”
Four printed race previews landed on the table.
Different analysts.
Different publications.
Different opinions.
Tommy looked across at Kenny.
“This should be interesting.”

The race books were open, the pencils were busy and opinions came thick and fast. Somewhere among the pages, each of them hoped they’d found tomorrow’s winner.
Kenny Starts Reading Between the Lines
Kenny didn’t speak straight away.
He slowly read every page.
One analyst liked Perfect Justice to continue his remarkable consistency.
Another thought Hollywood Hero was ready to peak after excuses at Grafton.
Others believed Fortune would improve sharply second-up, while Mighty Ulysses remained the forgotten runner capable of surprising everyone if conditions suited.
Even Time Quest kept appearing often enough to demand respect.
When Kenny finally placed the papers back on the table he folded his arms.
“Funny game.”
Finn smiled.
“What?”
“They’ve all watched the same horses…”
“…yet they’ve come to slightly different conclusions.”
Tommy laughed.
“That’s racing.”
“The horses can’t read the newspapers.”
Everyone laughed.

Every good country pub has someone who knows the local stories. Tommy wasn’t just ordering another drink… the barmaid was wanting to hear Kenny's whisper.
More Than Just Picking Winners
For the next hour the conversation drifted from horse to horse.
Barrier draws.
Weights.
Track conditions.
Jockey changes.
Tempo.
Who would lead.
Who would settle back.
Who would be charging home over the final two hundred metres.
No one claimed to know the winner.
That was never the point.
The enjoyment came from trying to solve tomorrow’s puzzle before the barriers opened.
Eventually Kenny reached for his pen.
He circled four runners.
Tommy leaned forward.
“So…”
“Who’s your tip?”
Kenny quietly closed the race book.
“If I tell you today…”
“…there’ll be nothing left to talk about tomorrow morning.”

Bert the Bookie had set the market, but experience had taught him one thing. The odds may predict the race… the horses still have the final say.
Tomorrow’s Market
The boys gathered their papers before wandering towards the bar for one last look at tomorrow’s market.
The bookmakers’ boards would soon be changing.
Prices would shorten.
Others would drift.
By this time tomorrow…
Talk would become action.
Dreams would become reality.
And somewhere among thirteen runners, one horse would take another step along The Road to Randwick.

“I’m not saying it’ll win… I’m just saying I’d rather be on than watching.” Kenny pauses beside the stable gate as Perfect Justice quietly earns his attention on Cup morning.
The Morning of the Cup has arrived and here are the Kennys Whispers
Kenny had barely finished his first coffee before he found himself leaning over the stable gate, absent-mindedly rubbing the forehead of a contented gelding while chatting to one of the stable hands.
“You didn’t hear it from me,” came the grin.
Kenny just smiled.
“I never hear anything,” he laughed.
But as he wandered away, one name stayed in his mind…
No. 12 Perfect Justice.
John Sargent has this fellow ticking over beautifully after a terrific last-start run at Randwick.
Barrier 5.
In-form apprentice Siena Grima takes the ride.
Kenny simply adjusted his Akubra and winked.
“I’m not saying it’ll win… I’m just saying I’d rather be on than watching.”

“Your Finn could have his own Hollywood Hero today…” A quiet whisper, a knowing smile and plenty of laughter make this Freja’s Cup morning story.
Freja’s Whisper for the Ladies
Meanwhile, Finn and Freja had wandered into the local florist, where the scent of fresh flowers filled the little shop.
While wrapping a bouquet, the elegant owner leaned across the counter with a knowing smile.
“So…” she whispered.
“Your Finn could end up with his own Hollywood Hero today.”
Freja laughed.
Hollywood Hero
The florist simply smiled, tapped the side of her nose and replied,
“I didn’t tell you that…”
The two women burst into laughter.
Freja left carrying flowers…
…and one very intriguing whisper.
Tommy’s Final Word
Will Kenny’s whisper be right?
Will the ladies have found another roughie?
Or will they both be buying the first round after the Cup?
That’s the beauty of country racing.
Sometimes the loudest opinions miss the winner…
…and sometimes the quietest whisper is the one everyone remembers.
Good luck to every horse, every trainer, every owner and every racegoer today. Enjoy the Cup.
