Part 3 - Goulburn Cup 2026
JUST PARTY CRASHES THE PARTY

Finn had sent the message.
Sir Artie.
There was a reason behind it too.
Tommy had grown up admiring one of rugby league’s great characters, Artie Beetson, and somehow that little connection had travelled all the way to Goulburn.
John and Josh had listened.
They had studied.
They had wondered.
And, like everyone else standing around the mounting yard that Sunday afternoon, they eventually had to stop talking and let fourteen hundred metres decide everything.
It didn’t take long.
Because the 2026 Goulburn Cup belonged to a horse nobody in our little travelling party had seen coming.
Just Party.
Sent out at $13, the five-year-old gelding had Jay Ford aboard for trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou.
And Ford knew exactly where he wanted to be.
While others searched for room and prepared their runs, he saved ground.
Then the opening came.
Just Party drove through, found another gear and suddenly the horse in the cerise colours was the one they all had to catch.
They couldn’t.
Cross Tasman chased him home.
Declichy Boulevard finished third.
Watson was fourth.
But the Cup belonged to Just Party.
No. 16.
A $13 winner.
And another name was written into Goulburn racing history.

There is always more behind a Cup winner than the few minutes we see on the track.
For Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, Just Party’s victory was another significant country feature for their Rosehill partnership.
For Jay Ford, it was the sort of ride experienced jockeys make look uncomplicated.
Save ground.
Wait.
Then take the opportunity when it appears.
And for Just Party, the Goulburn Cup brought something more.
The race carried Big Dance eligibility.
Goulburn wasn’t simply another trophy for the cabinet.
It had opened another door on the Road to Randwick.
Back near the racecourse, John looked at Josh.
Neither said anything for a moment.
Then Josh grinned.
“So much for Sir Artie.”
John laughed.
“Don’t tell Finn.”
Josh looked back towards the track.
“I reckon he’ll find out.”
Somewhere a phone was probably already buzzing.
That was racing.
You could study the form, listen to the experts, follow a hunch, remember an old football hero and convince yourself you had finally cracked the puzzle.
Then a $13 chance called Just Party comes along and rearranges the furniture. 😂
Perhaps that is why we keep coming back.
Not because we know what is going to happen.
Because we don’t.
